Benjamin Smith (60) was born in 1803 or thereabouts in High Roothing, Essex.
He married Nancy Day (106), born 1811 from Matching Green in Essex. Her parents were John and Frances Day.

By 1861 Benjamin was farming at Leaden Hall, Leaden Roding. He had 340 acres and was employing 9 men and 3 boys. He was still there in 1871 but his business had expanded to 430 acres with 13 labourers, 3 boys and 1 woman.
He died in Leaden Roothing on 30th December, 1871 leaving effects worth less than £3000.

Nancy moved, in retirement, to Shellow Hall at Shellow Bowells where her son Thomas was the farmer and his sister Ann kept her company and acted as housekeeper. She died on 17th July, 1894.
